Experiencias que cambian vidas: Fuerza, trabajo, compañerismo e iniciativa, características del voluntariado corporativo En noviembre del 2008, Delta Air Lines y Hábitat para la Humanidad Chile juntaron sus esfuerzos para bendecir a 12 familias de Casablanca comuna perteneciente a la V región de Chile.
José Ernesto Alvarenga Director Regional del Departamento de reservaciones para toda América Latina y el Caribe de Delta Chile, fue uno de los participantes en el proyecto Construyendo Hogares sin Fronteras, más de 60 voluntarios de Delta viajaron desde Estados Unidos en donde prefirieron dar tiempo de sus vacaciones y colaborar con las personas más necesitadas en Chile. En una conversación amena José Ernesto cuenta con gran anhelo y convicción que esta experiencia ha marcado en su vida, “dar un poco de lo que hemos sido bendecidos es un deber moral que refleja y contribuye a formarnos como mejores seres humanos”. No sólo es cuestión de dinero para ser feliz en la vida, acciones y/o programas como en el que participó José Ernesto, nos muestran que con nuestra ayuda muchos sueños se pueden cumplir. Delta Air lines colabora continuamente con Hábitat para la Humanidad en distintas partes de mundo, incentivando a sus miembros a construir hogares sin fronteras, como nos lo cuenta José Ernesto; “es increíble ver la fuerza de los empleados de Delta, la iniciativa de querer ayudar a las familias que lo necesitan, el trabajo en conjunto con compañeros no sólo de Chile sino también de diversas partes de Estados Unidos, fortalece la confianza y genera un mejor ambiente al momento de trabajar ya en las oficinas”. Construir hasta muy tarde, levantarse al siguiente día a las 06:30 am. con las energías recargadas y con la misión de continuar con la construcción y hacerlo bien era el objetivo, pensar que todo es un proceso desde el armado del techo hasta la pintura, en donde la mayor satisfacción es ver las familias sonrisas y lágrimas de esperanza, de madres que nunca pensaron llegar a tener su vivienda y niños que por fin tendrán un lugar adecuado. José Ernesto pudo sentir como los vínculos con las familias transcienden la construcción, alzando su mirada, recuerda con una sonrisa una anécdota que lleno su corazón, y nos comenta: “Un equipo de construcción mientras trabajan vieron al hijo menor de María una de las madres del proyecto, jugando con una bicicleta que estaba toda en mal estado, sus llantas estaban rotas y los tubos oxidados, pero el niño seguía jugando en ella, no le importaba el que dirán, en su rostro solo se veía momentos de felicidad, es allí cuando un grupo de voluntarios se fijaron en eso, hicieron una colecta entre ellos, en ese momento tomaron un auto y emprendieron su camino hasta encontrar una tienda que vendiera bicicletas, al llegar con tan inesperado regalo el niño corrió hacia sus nuevos amigos, con un fuerte abrazo y un beso dijo; Que Dios les de más, y salio enseguida a jugar en su nueva bicicleta”. Es así como el esfuerzo, esperanza, trabajo y compañerismo se puede ver en los ojos de quienes participaron en este voluntariado corporativo, y afianza n las palabras con las que nos despedidos de José Ernesto: “esto es sólo el principio, todos podemos ayudar y por mi parte seré un embajador de tan linda experiencia que ha fortalecido mi vida.

Strength, work, partnership and initiative, characteristics of corporate volunteerism In November of 2008, Delta Air Lines and Habitat for Humanity Chile joined strength to benefit 12 families from the community of Casablanca, in Region V of Chile.
José Ernesto Alvarenga, Delta Chile’s regional director of the Latin America and Caribbean Reservations Department, was one of the participants in the project Building Homes without Borders. More than 60 Delta volunteers traveled from the , on their vacation time, to collaborate with the neediest members of Chilean society. In a pleasant conversation, José Ernesto accounted with great yearning and conviction that the experience has marked his life, “to give a little of what we have been blessed with is a moral requirement that reflects and contributes to our formation as better human beings.” It is not just a question of money to be happy in life. Actions and/or programs, like the one José Ernesto participated in, show us that many dreams can be fulfilled with our help. Delta Air Lines collaborates continually with Habitat for Humanity in different parts of the world, incentivizing its members to build homes without borders. As José Ernesto told us: “It is incredible to see the strength of the Delta employees, the initiative of wanting to help a family in need, the comradery between coworkers no only from , but also from different cities in the . It strengthens confidence and generates an improved feeling upon returning to the office.”
Building until very late, waking up the next day at 6:30 a.m. with recharged energy and the objective to continue with the construction and do it well, thinking that everything is a process, from putting up the roof to painting the walls, in which the greatest satisfaction is seeing the families’ smiles and tears of hope, of mothers who nether thought they would have a home and of children who finally have a decent place to live.
José Ernestocould feel that the bonds with the families transcend the construction, andraising his gaze, remember with a smile an anecdote that filled his hears. Hetold us: “While working, a constructionteam saw the youngest son of María, one of the mothers of the project, playingwith bicycle that was in bad shape. The wheels were broken, the metal rusty,but the child continued playing with it, and all you could see in his face weremoments of happiness. It was then that a group of volunteers decided to get inthe car and find a bicycle shop. Upon returning with the unexpected gift, thechild ran to his new friends, and with a big hug and a kiss said, ‘I hope Godgive us more,’ and immediately ran off to play with his new bike.”
This is how the strength, hope, hard work and partnership can be seen in the eyes of those who participated in this corporate volunteerism event, and strengthened by the words that José Ernesto left us with: “This is only the beginning.
